Charlotte Mary St. Clair Moor was born on 18 August 1854 in Umzinto. Her father, William James Dunbar Moodie, was the eldest son of Lieutenant Donald Moodie, R.N. retired, who came to Natal on its annexation by Great Britain, as first Colonial Secretary. At the time of Charlotte's birth, her father was a magistrate. In 1878 Charlotte married Frederick Robert Moor, youngest son of Colonel John Moor. Frederick was born in Pietermaritzburg on 12 May 1853. In 1879 Moor took up farming in the Estcourt district and there built the family home 'Greystone' where the Moors seven children were born. In 1886, Moor was elected to the Legislative Council for Weenen. He later became Secretary for Native Affairs and in 1906 became Premier of Natal. He was awarded Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George in 1910. Charlotte Moor was an active, diligent woman who wrote books, poems and songs, kept diaries and was involved in charity work. She died on 26 September 1930
