Alice Margaret Gertrude Maytom was the first woman mayor of Durban. Her term of office was from 1966 to 1968. Prior to this she was elected deputy-mayor of Durban, once in 1944-1945, during the Second World War, and a second time in 1949-1950. She served as a councillor for the area of Parkhill and Durban North for 38 years.
During her years as councillor, deputy mayor and mayor Mrs M. Maytom served on council committees that dealt with issues of health and housing, welfare, education, parks and amenities and recreation. Mrs M. Maytom was also a member of the South African Women's Auxiliary Services (SAWAS), during World War Two. She held the position of Senior Assistant Provincial Commandant and assisted in the recruitment of women for war-time jobs. Mrs M. Maytom was also involved in the arrangements that were made for the accommodation of evacuees from Egypt, during the war. Margaret Maytom died in Durban in 1979

The Maytom papers comprise 47 files, but are indexed as 28 files to accommodate the additional material donated by Dr Peter Maytom, son of Mrs M. Maytom, to the Campbell Collections after the initial papers were filed. The accession numbers on files 23-28 and the b) - e) numbered files follow the sequence of the file numbers.
The collection consists mainly of material concerning Mrs M. Maytom's activities as councillor, deputy-mayor and mayor of Durban, with some personal correspondence.
Files 11a, 11b and 11d consist of photographs of Mrs M. Maytom carrying out official municipal business. The collection also consists of four scrapbooks of newscuttings.
