Capt William Richard Hulley and his wife Anne (née Brangan) came to South Africa from Yorkshire on the ship 'Stentor' as 1820 settlers. In 1836-37 their eldest son, Richard Brangan Hulley [then living at Algoa Bay?] was chosen to accompany Rev Francis Owen on a mission by land from Algoa Bay to the Zulus, then under Dingane. The collection includes Richard Brangan Hulley's account of this visit. His son, Richard Kippen Hulley, lived at Umzimkulu and took over the mill there. The papers include Richard Kippen Hulley's history of Umzimkulu and the Bhaca people.
