Alfred Eyles was born in England in 1861. He came to Natal as a "free-lance" Baptist missionary in 1882 and settled down the South Coast at 'Malan Cliff' near Marburg, an outstation of S. Aitchison's mission at Harding. He was joined by his brother in 1883. At the request of local chief, Makala, he opened a new mission in Imbizana in 1884 - the southernmost mission station in Natal. In 1887 he married Catherin Jarvis, of Wiltshire, England at Umfumi. They had 4 sons and 2 daughters. In 1895 Eyles retired and the Swedish Zulu Mission took over. He named his home 'Southbroom' after a family home in England. He served as a Justice of the Peace and died c1946.

The collection comprises the diary of Alfred Eyles, 1881-1895, with notes added in 1961 by his son, Alfred Eyles, Jnr. The diary is illustrated with photographs of sketches of the early dwellings of Alfred Eyles
