inkhanyesi - the Campbell Collections' logoThe Zulu verb khanya means 'to be light', 'to be bright' and 'to shine forth'. Light and brightness are taken-up in the beadwork of Zulu brides. In the Umkomaas and Umbumbulo areas beaded ornaments termed inkhanyesi (star) are constructed on a wire-frame and pinned to the bridal dress. Sometimes these stars are called uphephela (propeller) and/or phekepheke (buzz like a bee) - the associated traits of busyness and duty are considered positive attributes for women.

The inkhanyesi signify fortune, health and fertility.
