Federico Ramon de Bertodano y Wilson, 8th Marquis del Moral, was born in Australia in 1871. He went to England in 1895 where he trained as a lawyer. He travelled to Rhodesia and took part in the fighting against the Matabele in 1896. He fought for the British during the South African War, serving in the Intelligence Department on Kitchener's staff in Pretoria. He remained in South Africa until 1905 when he returned to England.
