MS Historical note:
John (Jock) Sutherland was born at Elgin, Scotland on 27 January 1877 and was employed from 1891-1894 at Glen Grant Glenlivet Distillery, Rothes, Scotland. He served in South Africa during the South African War (1899-1902) and in 1910 joined the South African Railways where he was employed as a carpenter. Sutherland remained with the S.A.R. until his retirement in 1937, with the exception of military service during World War I. From 1914-1916 he was a corporal in the South African Engineer Corps, serving in German South West Africa. He married Ethel Wynn circa 1922. Jock Sutherland died in Durban circa 1975.
