MS Historical note:
James Stuart, 1868-1942, was an official in the Natal Colonial Civil Service and a Zulu linguist.
James Stuart was born in 1868, and joined the Natal Civil Service in the late 1880s. He served as a magistrate in Natal and Zululand. He later became Assistant Secretary for Native Affairs in Natal, and, after the Union of South Africa was established, worked for the Union government. After his retirement, he and his wife moved to England where he died on the 8 March 1942.
