Laura Longmore was a lecturer in Anthropology at the University of the Witwatersrand. Her PH.D. thesis, 'The Dispossessed' (1957) was published as a book by Jonathan Cape, London, 1959.

MS Scope and Content:
The collection comprises 71 files and covers notes on Johannesburg 'township life', African music, customs, traditions, medicine etc. Longmore also undertook research on the Cape Malays of Cape Town, and the collection includes her field notes and chapter outlines and plans. Much of Longmore's research was conducted in the late 1940s and during the 1950s. There is also an extensive newspaper clippings collection on southern Africa as well as other African countries, eg Ethiopia, Somaliland, Namibia, etc. The collection includes a copy of Laura Longmore's Ph.D. thesis, 'The Dispossessed'. In File 69 there are two copies of 'Land of Sheba' by Laura Longmore.
