Isidor (Okkie) Gordon matriculated at the S.A. College School and went from there to the University of Cape Town to study medicine. At the University of Cape Town and in the State Health Department he trained as a pathologist, with a particular interest in forensic medicine. In 1946 he became Senior Government Pathologist in Durban, in charge of the State Pathology Laboratory, and in 1953 he was appointed the first Professor of Pathology at the University of Natal. He played a prominent part in the early stages of the Faculty of Medicine, and in 1955 began a Deanship that was to last for 16 years.
