Goatham was killed at Isandlwana on 22 January 1879, his last letter written to his mother two days before. Goatham married Susan Seale, their son Ashley Charles John Goatham, was born in King William's Town in 1878 and fought with the Cape Garrison Artillery during the Anglo-South African War, 1899-1902.
