This collection comprises mainly records of Emagusheni Trading Store, Pondoland, started c1883 by Irishman, Michael Hurley O'Donnell. His nephew, Henry Joseph Gallagher, came from Ireland in 1908 to assist and eventually took over the business which remained in the Gallagher family until 1970 when it was sold to the Xhosa Development Corporation.

MS Scope and Content:
Collection includes correspondence, business records and photographs. Included is a minute book for Flagstaff Civic & Traders Association, c1928-55. Photographs include the family, Emagusheni Trading Store, and the Western Desert and Switzerland taken during Brian Gallagher's service in the N.M.R during World War II. Included in the collection is a diary by Jean-Daniel Roth who died in 1948 on arrival in Durban, having contracted typhoid on the notorious "typhoid ship", 'Toscana', on his way to South Africa. Roth's family, who ran a trading store in Bizana, were friends of the Gallaghers.
