MS Historical note:
James and Matilda Button emigrated to Natal from England in 1854, accompanied by 9 of their 10 children. The family formed part of Bishop Colenso's advance party of workers. James Button died shortly after their arrival and the family broke up as a result. One of their sons, Frederick, became known as the 'Diamond' Button, after success at the Kimberley diamond fields. 'Gold' Button was Edward Button, another son, who discovered the first payable gold in the Transvaal
