MS Historical note:
Matthew Smith Blyth, b. Norfolk, England, 1836, d. Cape Town, 1889. As a Captain in the Cape 73rd Highland Regiment, Blyth fought in the Indian Mutiny and served in British Honduras. He arrived in Natal in 1866 and was appointed agent for Fingoland. In 1876 he was appointed Chief Magistrate of Griqualand East and in the same year appointed Chief Magistrate for the Transkei. He was married to Bessie Philpott and had 2 sons and 7 daughters
