Alan Woodrow was born in King William's Town circa November 1900, the second son of Edwin James Carr Woodrow, Justice of the Peace for the district of King William's Town, Cape, and Winifrede Mary Woodrow (nee Kilduff). Woodrow was educated at De la Salle School and Dale College, King William's Town. He began his architectural training at the Public Works Department, Pretoria, and then studied at the Architectural Association, Bedford Square, London, where he obtained his degree of Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects. He came to Natal in 1928.
