MS Historical note:
Killie (Margaret Roach) Campbell was born in Natal in 1881. Her name was Margaret Roach Campbell, but she preferred 'Killie', her grandmother's pet name for her, and adopted it as her official name when she was an adult. She was a daughter of Sir Marshall Campbell, pioneer of the sugar industry in Natal and a Natal parliamentarian, and Lady Ellen Campbell (nee Blamey). She was a granddaughter of Byrne settler, William Campbell.
Killie Campbell was educated in Natal and Scotland, and became an historian and a collector of Africana, with a particular interest in the history of Natal. She never married and died on 27 September 1965. Her well-known collection of Africana was bequeathed to the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, and is presently housed at 'Muckleneuk', the original family home in Durban, in which she lived for the last fifty years of her life.
