Collection includes the papers of Roy Gooden and Alfred Hurst Gooden:

  • Roy Gooden's notebook (1909-1918) and sermons (1913-1945)
  • Alfred Hurst Gooden's Observer's & Air Gunner's Flying Log Book (Jan 1944-Jun 1945); papers 1932-1982 including World War II & MOTHS; as well as printed material on World War I West Street Hut and World War II & MOTHS.

There are three photograph albums - pre-World War II family album; World War II; and postcards of World War II ("The Bombers go North").

Henry Callaway Gold (c1868-1945) was born at Highflats, the fourth son of Robert and Jane Gold. Henry spent his life farming in the Underberg area. By 1920 he owned 3 farms, namely 'Dartford' (4,600 acres), 'Excelsior' (2,700 acres), 'Goschen' (1,600 acres) and was in the process of buying another, 'Orchardbank'. He concentrated on horses, cattle and sheep and the production of forage. He was elected president of the Himeville Agricultural Society and later of the Natal Farmer's Association. Henry's first wife Margaret Fanny Nicholson died in childbirth in 1897. His second wife, Agnes Stone, survived him. Five of their children survived to maturity.

The collection includes 41 diaries kept by Henry Gold mainly recording farming activities and the labour he used between 1898 and 1942. There is also a Stone family photograph album which includes a number of photographs of members of the Gold family.

Ashley Thomas Goatham (1855-1879) came to the Cape with the British Army in 1874 as a Private in the 1st/24th Battalion, 2nd Warwickshire Regiment. The Regiment came from Gibraltar were it had been stationed since 1872. After taking part in the Kaffir War of 1877-78, the 2nd Warwickshire Regiment was posted to Natal where they suffered severe losses at the Battle of Isandlwana. Goatham was killed at Isandlwana on 22 January 1879, his last letter written to his mother two days before. Goatham married Susan Seale, their son Ashley Charles John Goatham, was born in King William's Town in 1878 and fought with the Cape Garrison Artillery during the Anglo-South African War, 1899-1902. His son, Leslie Goatham was in the South African Air Force in World War II.
The collection was purchased by the Campbell Collections in 1984 from Goatham's grandson, Leslie Goatham, then in his 70s and living in Cape Town.

The collection includes 25 letters (1872- 79) to Ashley Thomas Goatham's wife and family. There are miscellaneous items relating to the Zulu War and there are army discharge documents relating to his son, Ashley Charles John Goatham, (born at King William's Town) and his grandson, Leslie Goatham, both of whom appear to have been brought up in South Africa. One file contains photographs (mainly family).

Leslie Eugene Gevisser (1920-1987) was a member of a well-known Jewish family in Durban. He joined the Royal Durban Light Infantry in 1940 and was sent with his unit to North Africa where he served until his capture there in 1942. He spent the remainder of World War II as a prisoner-of-war in Italy and Germany

Captain Robert Garden of the 45th Regiment of Foot, arrived in the Cape from England with his Regiment in 1843, and came to Natal in 1848. He was based for most of his time in Natal in Pietermaritzburg. He made several journeys inland and along the coast of Natal in 1851 and 1852 and his journeys are recorded in his diary, where he comments on various subjects, e.g. historical, botanical, ethnological. He retired to England in 1853.

Collection comprises typed transcriptions of his diary, and miscellaneous notes and information, the originals of which are in the Pietermaritzburg Archives Repository of the National Archives of South Africa. This collection comprises mainly records of Emagusheni Trading Store, Pondoland, started c1883 by Irishman, Michael Hurley O'Donnell. His nephew, Henry Joseph Gallagher, came from Ireland in 1908 to assist and eventually took over the business which remained in the Gallagher family until 1970 when it was sold to the Xhosa Development Corporation.

Collection includes correspondence, business records and photographs. Included is a minute book for Flagstaff Civic & Traders Association, c1928-55. Photographs include the family, Emagusheni Trading Store, and the Western Desert and Switzerland taken during Brian Gallagher's service in the N.M.R during World War II. Included in the collection is a diary by Jean-Daniel Roth who died in 1948 on arrival in Durban, having contracted typhoid on the notorious "typhoid ship", 'Toscana', on his way to South Africa. Roth's family, who ran a trading store in Bizana, were friends of the Gallaghers.
