MS Historical note:
Private Charles Mason was born at Aldersgate, London in 1854. He was a solder maker and served in South Africa, Gibraltar and India. He was in 'B' Company, 24th Regiment of the South Wales Borderers at the defence of Rorke's Drift in 1879. On 28 June 1883 Mason was transferred to Army Reserve and then was recalled to the 1st South Wales Borderers on 30 October 1884. He was discharged on 26 February 1889.
